Soft Milk Rolls Recipe
Yield: 12 rolls
Serving size: 1 roll
Ingredients:
¾ cup warm milk
2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
2 tbsp granulated sugar
3 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
1 large egg
2 ¾ all-purpose flour
1 tsp salt
1 tbsp melted butter (for brushing)
*Optional - egg wash (1 beaten egg mixed with 1 tbsp water)
Directions:
In a small bowl, combine the warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy. This step ensures your yeast is alive and ready to work.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the yeast mixture, softened butter, egg, flour, and salt. Mix until the dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8-10 minutes (or 5-6 minutes in a stand mixer with a dough hook attachment) until it becomes smooth and elastic.
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
Punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a smooth ball and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, spaced slightly apart. Cover with a clean towel and rise again for about 20-30 minutes until they are puffy.
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
If using an egg wash, brush on top of the rolls. Bake the rolls for 15-18 minutes, or until they are golden brown. Brush with melted butter immediately as they come out of the oven for an extra soft finish.
Note: If slicing the rolls in half for sliders or sandwiches, let cool for about 10 minutes before cutting.
Storing your milk rolls:
Room temperature: Place the rolls in an air-tight container or wrap them tightly in plastic wrap/foil. Store at room temperature for up to 2 days to maintain freshness.
Fridge: If you live in a humid environment, store the rolls in an air-tight container in the refrigerator to prevent them from becoming stale.
Freezing: Allow rolls to cool completely after baking. Wrap each individual roll in plastic wrap, then place them in a freezer-safe container or ziploc. Store in the freezer for up to 1 month. To reheat, thaw at room temperature and warm in a 350 degree F oven for about 5-7 minutes.
